Where do you park your car in Bergamo?

The upper city area is the most beautiful in Bergamo and you probably plan to visit it. Here are some tips on where you can leave your car and enjoy the walk.

Parking your car in Città Alta (Upper Town)

If you are looking for free parking in the Upper Town, sorry to disappoint you but you won’t find any 🥲

IMPORTANT: there is a Restricted Traffic Zone in Upper Town that operates:

  • On holidays from 10 am to noon and 2 pm to 7 pm.
  • From March to the end of October (daylight saving time) the Limited Traffic Zone is also active on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. the following day.

When the Limited Traffic Zone is active you can still enter into the area but you MUST park in one of these 3 parking lots (otherwise you’ll get a fine):

– Fara parking lot (3.40€/hour): click here for the location.

– Porta Sant’Alessandro parking lot (3€/hour): click here for the location.

– Parking “Tre Armi” (3€/hour): click here for the location.

After entering the restricted traffic zone you have 30 minutes to park in one of these 3 places: if you do not, you will receive a fine.

Don’t worry, though: before entering the limited traffic zone, coming from the downtown/station area, you will find signs warning you of free spaces!

When the restricted traffic zone is not active you can freely get into the area but the only options to park your car are the one that I mentioned before!

On the street you might see some free parking with yellow lines: these are reserved for residents so leaving your car in those places means risking a fine!

Parking your car in Città Bassa (Lower Town)

The two closest parking lots used by tourists are definitely:

– Garage San Marco which is a 5-minute walk from the funicular (2.50€/hour): click here for the location.

– Parking Piazza Libertà which is a 7-minute walk from the funicular (2.20€/hour): click here for the location.

The funicular is very nice but beware: on weekends there will probably be quite a queue (sometimes up to 40 minutes waiting time): in that case, you can either walk up (about 20 minutes uphill) or take bus 1 (about 8 minutes to get to “Colle Aperto” the terminus in Città Alta).

Parking your car in Città Bassa (Lower Town) for free

In general, you will need a lot of luck and may have to search a bit as there are just a few free parking lots in Bergamo.

If you’re feeling lucky, there are several free parking lots close to the “Italcementi” pools (click here to get there). If you find white stripes you can leave it for free! From here you will be about a 15-minute walk from the funicular or a 22-minute walk from Colle Aperto (Città Alta), in which case you will have to take a beautiful but steep climb.

Alternatively:

– Via Maironi Giovanni da Ponte: click here for the location or here for another small parking spot. If you are lucky you can leave your car there (during weekdays you might find a spot, in the weekend you need to be very lucky😅). From here you’ll have to walk 20-25 minutes and you can get directly to the upper town (passing “behind” the standard street).

– Carrefour on Via Baioni: click here for the location. From here you will have to walk about 30-35 minutes and you can get directly to the upper town (passing “behind” the standard street).

If, on the other hand, you are willing to walk a bit more (25/30 minutes to get to the funicular) I leave you with these two free parking lots where you might get lucky:
