1) Porta Torre
A fantastic example of Romanesque military architecture! Porta Torre is the most impressive surviving section of Como’s medieval defensive walls. Standing beneath it, you can imagine the city in ancient times—soldiers, merchants, and centuries of history all passing through this mighty gateway.
2) Piazza San Fedele
Once the site of the Roman Forum, this square remained the commercial heart of the city until the 1800s. It was also an important religious center during the early medieval period. Get ready to discover the fascinating story behind its famous “Dragon Portal”!
3) Como Cathedral (Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta)
Nearly four centuries of work went into building this cathedral, started in 1396. Its façade is one of the finest examples of late Gothic architecture in northern Italy. The interior is just as captivating, blending different styles and artistic influences accumulated over centuries.
4) Piazza Cavour
This lively square is the beating heart of Como! Surrounded by elegant historic buildings, cafés, restaurants, and shops, Piazza Cavour opens directly onto the lake, offering a stunning panoramic view. It’s the perfect place to relax and soak in Como’s elegant atmosphere.
5) Tempio Voltiano
Set right on the lakeshore, this neoclassical temple celebrates Alessandro Volta—the genius from Como who invented the electric battery. The museum inside (ticket €5, not included) showcases his life and inventions. A beautiful tribute to one of Italy’s greatest scientific minds.
6) Villa Olmo
Just a short walk from the lakefront, this 18th-century villa is one of Como’s most iconic architectural gems. Its grand halls, gardens, and lakeside views make it a must-see during any visit. It also hosts art exhibitions and cultural events throughout the year.
7) Como–Brunate Funicular (Funicolare Como–Brunate)
If you’re up for an extra adventure, take the funicular to Brunate! This charming hilltop village offers incredible views over Lake Como and the Alps. Ticket: €6.60 (not included). Trust me—the panorama is absolutely worth it.
8) Faro Voltiano
Since 1927, this 29-meter lighthouse has stood proudly above the lake. Built to honor Alessandro Volta, it lights up every night in the colors of the Italian flag. Reaching it requires a bit of energy, but once you’re at the top, the views are nothing short of spectacular.

Como’s cuisine is a delicious mix of lake traditions and Alpine flavors. Don’t miss dishes like risotto al pesce persico, polenta uncia, missoltini, and local cheeses.
