1) Arezzo Cathedral
The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Donatus stands on San Pietro hill, in the upper part of the city. We’ll explore its history, its architecture and some curiosities connected to this beautiful landmark.
2) Via di San Domenico & Piazza San Domenico
The Basilica of San Domenico is one of the most important religious buildings in Arezzo. Its construction began in 1275 and continued throughout the 14th century, supported by the influential Ubertini and Tarlati families. In 1276, even before being completed, it hosted what is considered the first conclave in the history of the Catholic Church.
3) Basilica di San Francesco
The Basilica of San Francesco, with its unfinished façade, hides an extraordinary artistic treasure: the famous fresco cycle *The Story of the True Cross* by Piero della Francesca, inside the Bacci Chapel. A true Renaissance masterpiece and one of the greatest fresco cycles in the world.
4) Piazza Grande
One of the most iconic and fascinating places in Arezzo! Piazza Grande is known for its trapezoidal shape and its unique sloping ground. Dating back to the 12th century and transformed in the 16th century, it’s a perfect place to understand the city’s medieval and Renaissance identity.
5) Santa Maria delle Grazie
The Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta is an ancient baptismal church whose origins may date back to the 5th–6th century, possibly built on a former pagan site. Over the centuries it evolved, and the Romanesque-style church we see today took shape in the 12th century. A must-see for anyone who loves medieval architecture!
6) Fortezza Medicea
Located in the heart of Prato Park, the Medici Fortress is one of the most important examples of Renaissance military architecture in Tuscany. Its strategic position had already been used in medieval times, making it a key defensive point for centuries.
7) Anfiteatro Romano
Built between the late 1st and early 2nd century AD, this Roman amphitheater reflects the city’s fascinating blend of Etruscan roots and Roman influence. It once hosted games and gladiatorial shows and could accommodate up to 10,000 spectators. Let’s discover its ancient stories!
