1) Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II
Welcome to one of Pisa’s main squares! Completely redesigned in the 19th century, this area once held the medieval walls and the ancient San Gilio gate. That gate gave access to today’s Corso Italia—once called Carraia del Carmine—which led straight to the railway station. A great place to start our walk.
2) Keith Haring’s “Tuttomondo” Mural
A surprising burst of color in the heart of Pisa! Keith Haring created Tuttomondo in 1989 after being invited by a young local he met in New York. It’s one of the artist’s last public works and represents peace and harmony among cultures—perfect for a fun and vibrant photo stop.
3) Church of Santa Maria del Carmine
Built between 1324 and 1326, this church was among the first Carmelite churches in Europe. Its quiet interior and elegant Gothic style make it a refreshing stop before diving deeper into the city’s historic center.
4) Church of Santa Maria della Spina
A tiny jewel of Pisan Gothic architecture! Built in 1230 right along the Arno, this church once stood beside an important medieval bridge that no longer exists. Despite its small size, its façade is incredibly ornate—one of Pisa’s most photographed hidden gems.
5) Borgo Stretto
One of Pisa’s most charming and lively streets! Locals simply call it Borgo. With its arcades, medieval architecture, boutiques, and cafés, it’s a great place to soak in the city’s atmosphere and understand its blend of history and daily life.
6) Piazza dei Cavalieri
In the Middle Ages, this was called Piazza delle Sette Vie because seven streets converged here. It later became the political and administrative center of Pisa. Today you’ll see the famous Palazzo dell’Orologio and the elegant buildings designed during the Renaissance—full of curious stories and legends!
7) Botanical Garden & Museum (Orto e Museo Botanico)
Founded in 1543, this is considered the oldest university botanical garden in the world! Part of the University of Pisa, the garden contains rare plants, greenhouses, and a fascinating botanical museum. Ticket: €4.
8) Piazza dei Miracoli
A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and one of the most iconic squares in Italy! The poet Gabriele D’Annunzio nicknamed it the “Field of Miracles,” referring to the extraordinary monuments found here. Get ready—you’re about to see some incredible architecture.
9) Leaning Tower of Pisa
The star of the show! The Leaning Tower served as the cathedral’s bell tower and took a staggering 177 years to complete. Its famous tilt has made it one of the world’s most recognized landmarks. Ticket: €27 (includes all monuments in the square).
10) Baptistery of St. John (Battistero di San Giovanni)
The largest baptistery in Italy, begun in 1152 by architect Diotislavi. Its acoustics are magical, and its mix of Romanesque and Gothic elements makes it a highlight of Piazza dei Miracoli. Ticket: €27.
11) Pisa Cathedral (Cattedrale di Pisa)
Designed in 1064 by Buscheto, this cathedral represents the height of Pisan Romanesque style—a blend of Islamic, Byzantine, and classical influences. Inside and outside, it’s a masterpiece you absolutely don’t want to miss.
12) Camposanto Monumentale
Begun in 1277, this monumental cemetery is a peaceful cloister enclosed in white marble. Legend says it was built around sacred soil brought back from Golgotha during the Crusades. Another jewel within Piazza dei Miracoli. Ticket: €27.
