Now we step into the oldest heart of Florence. San Lorenzo was once the cathedral of the city and later became the church of the Medici—yes, those Medici. It’s a fantastic spot to learn how Florence grew from a Roman settlement into the capital of the Renaissance. Spoiler: the Medici had something to do with it!
3) Baptistery of San Giovanni
In front of you is one of the most iconic monuments in Florence. The Baptistery of San Giovanni is famous for its golden bronze doors, rich symbolism, and deep connection to the city’s religious traditions. If you’re doing a Florence itinerary, this stop is absolutely essential.
4) Duomo – Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore
Here it is: the superstar of Florence! The Duomo is an architectural miracle, crowned by Brunelleschi’s dome—one of the most impressive engineering feats of all time. We’ll talk about its secrets, curiosities, and why this cathedral is a must-see for anyone visiting Florence.
5) Giotto’s Bell Tower
A jewel of Gothic architecture. Its colorful marble, elegant reliefs, and perfect proportions make it one of the most beautiful towers in Europe. If you climb to the top, you’ll get one of the best views in the city—totally worth the effort!
6) Piazza della Repubblica
Welcome to the main square of Florence! Piazza della Repubblica marks the heart of the modern city but sits exactly where the Roman forum once stood. Today it’s full of cafés, music, street performers, and energy. A great place to grab a coffee and soak in the Florentine vibes.
7) Basilica of Santa Croce
Pure magic. This majestic Gothic church is the resting place of Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli, and many other Italian legends—earning it the nickname “Temple of Italian Glories.” If you’re looking for important Florence attractions, this one is always at the top of the list.
8) Piazza della Signoria
This square has been the political heart of Florence for centuries. From medieval executions to grand celebrations, Piazza della Signoria has seen everything. Today it’s an open-air museum full of sculptures, history… and plenty of interesting stories!
9) Loggia dei Lanzi
Right next to the square, the Loggia dei Lanzi is basically a free Renaissance gallery. Here you’ll find masterpieces carved in marble and bronze, each with a dramatic mythological story behind it. It’s one of the best spots in Florence to enjoy art in the open air.
10) Uffizi Galleries
The Uffizi is one of the most famous museums in the world, home to Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, works by Leonardo da Vinci, Caravaggio, Michelangelo… and the list goes on. Even just walking through the courtyard is a special experience.
11) Ponte Vecchio
Time to cross the most famous bridge in Florence! Ponte Vecchio is full of jewelry shops, medieval charm, and incredible views along the Arno River. It’s one of those “you can’t leave Florence without seeing this” places—and perfect for a photo (or ten).

Planning a day in Florence with your car? While the city is best explored by train or on foot, driving can still be convenient if you want to visit the surrounding areas such as Chianti, small hill towns, or the Tuscan countryside. If you do arrive by car, here’s what you need to know to avoid fines and choose the best parking option.
Driving in Florence: What Makes It Complicated
The historic centre of Florence is almost entirely inside a ZTL (Restricted Traffic Zone). Only vehicles with special authorization — like residents, taxis, emergency vehicles, and cars with hotel-garage permits — are allowed to enter during controlled hours. Cameras monitor every access point, and entering without a permit results in automatic fines.
Even when the ZTL is open, non-residents are not allowed to park on the streets in the centre. Street parking is reserved for permit holders, and illegally parked cars are often towed. For this reason, the best approach is to choose an official car park or garage outside the restricted zone.
ZTL Hours
The ZTL rules change throughout the year, but the regular schedule is:
Monday to Friday: 7:30–20:00
Saturday: 7:30–16:00
In summer, a night-time ZTL is also active from April to early October:
Thursday: 23:00–3:00
Friday: 23:00–3:00
Saturday: 23:00–3:00
If your hotel is inside the ZTL and you have a pre-booked garage, the garage will register your plate number so you can enter legally.
Parking Options in Florence
Florence offers several types of parking solutions depending on how close you want to be to the centre and how much you wish to spend.
1. Park-and-Ride: The Easiest Option
The most convenient choice for many visitors is the Villa Costanza car park, located directly at the A1 motorway exit. After parking, you can take the modern tramway into the city centre. The ride to “Alamanni – Stazione” takes about 20–25 minutes and costs €1.70.
Villa Costanza is also the most economical solution: short stays cost just a few cents, and a full day is around €7.
2. Parking Just Outside the ZTL
If you want to park close enough to walk into the centre, there are several official FlorenceParcheggi car parks located right outside the restricted area. These are reliable, well-marked, and generally safe.
Sant’Ambrogio Parking is ideal for visiting Santa Croce and the lively market area. Rates increase gradually during the morning, while afternoons and nights are usually cheaper.
Porta al Prato – Leopolda Parking is another excellent choice. It sits near the tram line, so you can reach Santa Maria Novella Station in just a few minutes.
These car parks offer a good balance between price and proximity.
3. Central Parking (Inside the ZTL)
If convenience is your priority and you don’t mind higher prices, you can choose one of the garages inside the ZTL. These are often used by hotel guests. Popular options include the car park under Santa Maria Novella Station and the garage near the San Lorenzo Market. Prices are higher than in other parts of the city, especially at peak times.
Private garages inside the centre also offer daily rates, usually around €30–35 for 24 hours. You can reserve many of them online through parking platforms.
4. Street Parking (Blue Lines)
Paid on-street parking marked by blue lines is available around the outer edges of the city centre. These spaces are metered, and tickets can be purchased from nearby machines. They are suitable for short stops, but they are not recommended if you plan to stay the full day, as availability is limited and rules can vary.
5. Free Parking Areas
Free parking exists mainly in the outer districts of Florence. One large free zone is near the stadium, around Viale Pasquale Paoli and the Nelson Mandela Forum. You may also find white-lined parking spaces (“strisce bianche”) in suburban neighbourhoods.
Keep in mind that these areas are not supervised. Cars with foreign plates sometimes attract unwanted attention, so avoid leaving valuables inside.
