1) Ursino Castle
Ursino Castle stands proudly in the square dedicated to Frederick II of Swabia, who ordered its construction. When it was built, the fortress stood right by the sea, surrounded by a defensive moat and strong walls of lava stone. Over the centuries, eruptions and earthquakes reshaped the coastline — leaving the castle “farther from the sea” than it once was. A perfect start to explore Catania’s medieval heart!
2) A’ Piscaria – Fish Market
Welcome to one of the liveliest and most iconic corners of Catania! The famous fish market — “A’ Piscaria” in Sicilian — bursts with energy, colors, sounds and incredible street food. Located near Piazza del Duomo, it’s the perfect place to see real everyday life… and maybe try something delicious.
3) Fontana dell’Amenano
This elegant Carrara marble fountain, created in 1867 by the sculptor Tito Angelini, is dedicated to the underground river Amenano. Locals say the water looks like a “white veil” — and it’s one of the most photographed spots in the city.
4) Piazza del Duomo
The main square of Catania and one of its most beautiful! Here you’ll find the city’s iconic monuments, including the famous Elephant Fountain and the Cathedral of Sant’Agata. A lively, panoramic and symbolic place — the perfect postcard of Catania.
5) Cathedral of Sant’Agata
Built in 1090 over the remains of a temple dedicated to Jupiter, the cathedral was rebuilt in Baroque style after the devastating 1693 earthquake. Dedicated to Sant’Agata, the city’s patron saint, it holds centuries of faith, art and fascinating stories. A must-see!
6) Piazza Università
This elegant square takes its name from the Palazzo degli Studi. At its corners you’ll spot four bronze lampposts depicting legendary characters from Catania’s folklore — including Cola Pesce, Gammazita and the heroic paladin Uzeta. A fun stop full of local legends!
7) Roman Amphitheatre (Anfiteatro Romano)
Hidden beneath Piazza Stesicoro lies an ancient Roman amphitheatre from the 1st century BC. Over time, lava flows from Etna and earthquakes partially buried it, but what remains is still impressive. We’re not entering during the tour, but you can definitely visit it on your own.
8) Via dei Crociferi
One of the most atmospheric streets in Catania! Famous for its Baroque churches and cinematic charm, Via dei Crociferi is often used as a film location. Walking here truly feels like stepping into a movie.
9) Benedictine Monastery of San Nicolò l’Arena
A monumental complex and one of the largest monasteries in Europe! The Benedictine Monastery played a key role in Catania’s history, especially in the 18th century. Its courtyards, halls and cloisters reflect the wealth and influence of the monks who lived here.
10) Local Food & Restaurant Tips in Catania
Catania’s cuisine is bold, flavorful and unforgettable. Try arancino (yes, it’s masculine here!), pasta alla Norma, fresh seafood, cipollata and granite with brioche.
