1) Church of San Giovanni degli Eremiti
Our Palermo walking tour starts with one of the city’s most fascinating monuments: San Giovanni degli Eremiti. Part of the UNESCO itinerary “Arab-Norman Palermo,” this church blends centuries of religious history — from an ancient monastery to a mosque, and finally a Benedictine center where the abbot was even the King’s confessor. A truly magical place!
2) Norman Palace (Royal Palace)
Welcome to the oldest royal palace in Europe! The Norman Palace stands on ancient Punic-Roman foundations, still visible in the underground area. Seat of kings, rulers and parliaments, this building represents more than 2,000 years of Sicilian history — a must-see for architecture lovers and history fans.
3) Palermo Cathedral
One of Palermo’s most iconic landmarks and another UNESCO World Heritage Site! The Cathedral mixes Byzantine, Arab, Norman and Latin elements into an extraordinary architectural masterpiece. Inside you’ll find royal tombs, the Diocesan Museum and the Chapel of Santa Rosalia, the beloved patron saint of the city.
4) Teatro Massimo
The largest opera house in Italy (and the third in Europe!). Sitting on the edge between old Palermo and the new expansion, Teatro Massimo is a masterpiece of neoclassical architecture. Fun fact: its steps appear in the famous final scenes of *The Godfather Part III*.
5) Quattro Canti
Known by locals as “Quattro Canti,” this Baroque square sits exactly where Via Maqueda crosses Via Vittorio Emanuele. Each of the four corners represents a historical district (“mandamento”), decorated with fountains and statues that symbolize the seasons, Spanish kings, and protective saints. One of the most photogenic spots in Palermo!
6) Piazza Pretoria
Also called “Piazza della Vergogna” — the Square of Shame! The nickname comes from the many nude statues of its impressive Renaissance fountain. Between palaces, staircases and sculptures, this square is one of the most striking in the city center.

7) La Vucciria Market
You can’t visit Palermo without exploring at least one of its historic markets! La Vucciria is the most iconic: once chaotic and lively, today full of character, colors and amazing food stalls. Its name comes from the French “boucherie,” meaning butcher’s shop — because meat was originally sold here.
8) La Kalsa
One of Palermo’s oldest neighborhoods, founded during Arab rule. With narrow streets, hidden courtyards, Arab-Norman architecture and a vibrant local life, the Kalsa is the perfect place to feel the city’s multicultural soul.
9) Palazzo Abatellis
Located in Piazza Magione, this 15th-century palace is a gem of Gothic-Catalan architecture. Originally the residence of nobleman Francesco Abatellis, today it hosts important artworks, including the famous “Triumph of Death.” A must for art lovers!
10) Museum of Majolica (Stanze al Genio)
If you’re a fan of majolica tiles, this private museum will be paradise! Spread across eight beautifully arranged rooms, the collection showcases tiles from Campania and Sicily dating from the 15th to the 19th century. Unique, colorful and truly fascinating.
