1) Ortigia Market (Mercato di Ortigia)
Let’s start with some local flavor! The Ortigia Market has been a lively commercial hub since Greek and Roman times thanks to its position near the port. Merchants once traded food, spices, goods, and even ideas from all over the Mediterranean. Today it’s one of the most vibrant places in Syracuse—perfect for tasting local specialties and soaking in the atmosphere.
2) Temple of Apollo (Tempio di Apollo)
Right by the market stands one of the oldest Doric temples in Sicily. The Temple of Apollo has lived many lives: ancient temple, early Christian church, mosque, and Norman fort. This impressive archaeological site is a great intro to the layered history of Syracuse.
3) Fountain of Diana (Fontana di Diana)
In the heart of Piazza Archimede, you’ll find this elegant fountain dedicated to the goddess Diana. Created in the early 1900s by sculptor Giulio Moschetti, it’s a beautiful tribute to local myths and a perfect stop for a quick photo.
4) Syracuse Cathedral (Cattedrale di Siracusa)
One of the city’s absolute must-sees! The cathedral stands on the remains of a 5th-century BC Doric temple dedicated to Athena. You can still spot the ancient Greek columns built right into the church’s walls. A stunning blend of Greek, Norman, and Baroque styles all in one place.
5) Arethusa Spring (Fonte Aretusa)
A magical freshwater spring just steps from the sea! Surrounded by papyrus plants and ancient legends, the Arethusa Spring has inspired poets for centuries. It’s one of the most peaceful and atmospheric spots in Ortigia.
6) Neapolis Archaeological Park (Parco Archeologico della Neapolis)
Now we head to one of the most important archaeological areas in the Mediterranean. The park is huge and full of history carved in stone. Two of the top landmarks inside are included as dedicated stops below.
7) Greek Theatre (Teatro Greco)
Inside the Neapolis Park stands the magnificent Greek Theatre—one of the largest ever built. It’s still used today for shows and classical performances. Standing here, you really feel the power and sophistication of ancient Syracuse.
8) Ear of Dionysius (Orecchio di Dioniso)
Another iconic site inside the park! This tall, cave-like chamber has incredible acoustics and was carved into the limestone centuries ago. Legend says the tyrant Dionysius used it to listen to prisoners… but that’s a story for the tour!
9) Sanctuary of the Madonna of Tears (Santuario Madonna delle Lacrime)
This striking modern sanctuary was built after a miraculous event in 1953, when a small image of the Virgin Mary reportedly shed tears. Its shape and size make it one of the most unique buildings in Syracuse.
10) Sanctuary of Santa Lucia al Sepolcro
Dedicated to Syracuse’s patron saint, this sanctuary stands on the site of Saint Lucy’s martyrdom and burial. It’s an important religious landmark and a peaceful stop just outside the old city walls.

Planning to visit Syracuse and Ortigia by car? Here’s everything you need to know
about parking and the ZTL (Limited Traffic Zone) so you can enjoy
the historic center without worrying about fines.
Much of Ortigia, the old town of Syracuse, is protected by a ZTL.
Only authorised vehicles (such as residents and guests with a permit) are allowed to enter when
the ZTL is active. In some central areas near the Cathedral, restrictions may apply
all day, every day, while other streets follow different schedules depending on
the season, weekends or public holidays.
ZTL access is clearly indicated at the bridges leading onto the island. If you enter when the
ZTL is active without permission, cameras will automatically record your license plate and a
fine will be issued. If you are staying in Ortigia, always contact your accommodation in advance
to check if they can request a temporary permit for loading and unloading luggage.
In Syracuse and Ortigia you’ll see different colored lines on the road indicating the type of
parking:
For blue-line and most official parking areas you usually have two options:
Rates can vary, but as a general idea, street parking is usually around
€1 per hour, while larger car parks close to the historic center may cost a bit
more. Always double-check the signs next to where you park for current fees and time limits.
Because Ortigia is small and many spaces are reserved for residents, finding a spot directly
on the island can be difficult, especially in high season. A practical solution is to
park outside the ZTL and walk in.
Popular options include larger paid parking areas just before the bridges to Ortigia
or along the seafront. These are usually the best choice if you plan to spend several hours
exploring the island on foot.
With these simple tips, you can leave the car in a safe spot and enjoy your
