Museo Nazionale Archeologico (pass by)
One of the most important archaeological museums in Italy! Founded in 1887 during the development of the Borgo Umbertino area, the museum holds extraordinary finds that tell the story of ancient Taras, the Spartan colony that gave birth to today’s Taranto.
1) Monumento al Marinaio d’Italia
Let’s begin our Taranto walking tour with one of the city’s most iconic symbols. Inaugurated in 1974 and created by Vittorio Di Cobertaldo, this monument celebrates Taranto’s deep bond with the sea. A perfect spot to introduce the “City of the Two Seas” and its maritime identity.
2) Castello Aragonese
A true masterpiece rising at the edge of the Old Town! The Aragonese Castle, also known as Castel Sant’Angelo, is a majestic fortification with a quadrangular layout and a large internal courtyard. Positioned right on the water, it has defended Taranto for centuries — get ready to discover its fascinating story.
3) Colonne del Tempio Dorico
Behind the fence in Piazza Castello stand the only surviving columns of the ancient 6th-century BC Doric Temple of Poseidon. These imposing remnants are among the oldest Greek monuments in all of Magna Graecia. A tiny site, but an enormous piece of history!
Palazzo di Città (pass by)
Built between 1864 and 1869, the Palazzo di Città is a beautiful example of Umbertine eclecticism, a style widely used in institutional buildings throughout Italy at the time. It marks the architectural identity of Taranto’s Borgo district.
4) Museo Ipogeo Spartano
Located inside the Bellacicco Hypogeum (once the hypogeum of Palazzo de Beaumont Bonelli), this museum takes you on a journey through the entire history of Taranto — from its Spartan origins in the 8th century BC to the noble palace above, built in the 1600s. A walk through centuries carved into the rock!
5) Cattedrale di San Cataldo
Taranto’s cathedral is a treasure of Apulian history — and the oldest cathedral in Puglia! Originally dedicated to Mary Magdalene and later to San Cataldo, patron saint of the city, its layered architecture reflects more than a millennium of devotion and transformation.
6) Chiostro di San Domenico
Located in the heart of the Old Town, the Church of San Domenico (or San Pietro Imperiale) is one of Taranto’s architectural gems. Completed in 1360, it blends Romanesque and Gothic elements and features a picturesque staircase that leads to the church above. A peaceful, atmospheric corner perfect for a short break during your walk.

Before every attraction / monuments included in the tour you will find a button that connects you to google map. You just press that button and you are done! Once you get to your destination you can go back to the digital guide and read/listen everything!
